Get involved with your local homeless shelter. The homeless need more than just blankets. The stereotypical need for blankets is always on people's minds. Find out just how much is needed to give these individual a hand up not a hand out. What about the little stuff no one ever thinks about like toothpaste tooth brushes, deodorant, soap, etc. These may not seem like much, but if you don't have clean clothes and can not present your self well for job interviews; They can not ever get out of the homeless way of life. Thank you for your interest.

actually I work at a homeless shelter and the best thing to do is to ask your local homeless shelter what they need. Alot of homeless people have unique situations and they become so desperate anything even a blanket you give them will become drug money, cigarette money, alcohol money. And yes alot of them will be grateful for the blanket and really use it but not most people to be honest with you will.

Donate money or your time to a homeless shelter in your area, they know what they need, or you can call and ask them what items are needed.I think it is a great thing you are doing!!Many people forget the homeless or they think all of them are drug addicts or alcoholics and that isn't true. There should be more people like you-if there were the homeless problem probably wouldn't be so bad.

Contact Larry Rice in St.Louis, mo. on his website, just type in Larry Rice Ministries and he will come up.He helped my family during the Mississippi floods in '93 and he is the only honest one we could find.
Tell him that Brucewayne O'Dell sent you and that I am in the Philippines at http://freemedicalhelp.tripod.com
Even the Red Cross only gave out peanut butter sandwiches and ran off after a short time when we asked for volunteers to help clean up and some real food for a change!

I used to hand out hard cash money to pan handlers on the streets of Boston MA until i found there was one caught driving away in a BMW.
Support a reputable homeless shelter in your area. They know what's happening out there and could best distribute the assistance.

When I read the question, I was thinking blankets... I think that is a fabulous idea. Or, call your local St. Vincent's, or homeless shelter - and see what they are in desperate need of.

Go to a thrift store and buy them some shoes or warm clothes. At night it gets really cold, even on in to Spring. If you could find sleeping bags they are good. When you see duffle bags, think as if you had to care everything that you own on you everyday. My daughter and I do this several times a year. You are going to feel so good about yourself.MORE POWER TO YOU....

i was thinking the same thing about a month ago, its a tuff question, do you want to help this one time or start a regular trend out of it? if so then look for a financial sponsor or go to your town hall to get organized about it.
God bless and best wishes in your endeavor
