It sounds like your alernator belt and maybe even the alternator need to be looked at.

You just answered your own question (belt squealing). For a quick repair run some chalk along the inside of the belt to soak up moisture or oil then get a new belt asap.

Check the alterator. Its an old volvo, the belts will always squeek. Spray a lil wd-40 on them once in a while.

From what you are saying, either belt is slipping or pulley froze. Check under hood if pulley's turning and belt squealing replace belt. If pulley not turning and belt squealing replace both.

i would check the tension of the alt. belt. Squealing normally means loose belt. If tension is good then chedk bearings in alt. Also test alt. to see what voltage output is.
