The gas leaking thing, I thought you were kidding. Then I read some of the responses and now I know how people start to believe such stories. The normal 'no picture' symptom for the various plasmas that get fixed in my shop, has to do with the power-supply module not delivering all the various power sources needed to activate the PDP (plama display panel). Some times it's the power-supply it self, or one of the boards it feeds the power to develops a short and thus the power supply cannot deliver that supply. Many times a X or Y sustain board gets shorted and other times the driver IC's fail. Find a shop in your area that is factory authorized for your brand and get an estimate. I would give you estimates on the price of these boards I've mentioned, but I cannot since you have neglected to tell me the brand or size. Such as the power-supply for one manufacturer might be $350 and another might be $1200. Good luck.

Get it checked, but be aware that plasmas have a very short life, compared to other TVs, and are expensive to repair. If you need to replace your plasma, make sure you take out a 5 year warranty. I know a guy who is on his third plasma after only three years. Each time the plasma broke just as the 12 month warranty ran out.

That's a myth. Plasma TV eventually go out but its not because the gass leaked. The phosphers just loose their ability to glow.
Check out http://plasmatvscience.org for more info on plasma technology.
From your description of it just going off I would say your video card went bad in it. Which is pretty common.
It might only be a couple of hundred to fix it so you might want to have someone check it out. You can find tv repair people on yellowpages.com if you are in the US.
If you're really just wanting to buy a new TV check out some online places like http://TVAuthority.com they are decent online retailers for big screen televisions.

Get it checked out. It would gradually fade if it was a leak. Unless you have loads of money and no sense.
