A couple of people I know have noticed that dads can be a playmate, then just say- OK, time to leave, time to do HW, or, don't ever talk to your brother like htat again, and the kids will mostly listen.
However, once the mom becomes a playmate, it is tougher to just draw that line and become the authority figure.
Any comments?

It was the opposite in our house, because my husband never wanted to be "the bad guy", so I was forced to be the authority figure since he refused to be. I could have a good time with my girls, but they KNEW if I gave them "the look", it was time to get down to the business of responsibility / accountability! Same for all of my nieces & nephews! The only one who hasn't been intimidated by "the look" so far is my 2 year old granddaughter! ;-) (But she's a good girl who usually does what she's told the first time, so I have only had to use the look on her for comic relief! LOL!)

That is SO true! I try and play around with my kids and they NEVER know when to turn it off. Even if I tell them that I am being serious now...they just keep it going. But my husband on the other hand, he says stop, and they stop! He says I am just not as consistant as he is or not as firm...I have done the EXACT same things that he has done, they just don't take me seriously.

I have noticed this in my adult life too! Maybe it's just me, but people don't take me seriously. I will talk to a customer at work and they just don't belive me or will just be down right rude. But my boss will talk to them and say the same thing I just said and they will act like he's the smartest man out there and treat him with the utmost respect.

I just don't get it?!!!?

Moms do seem to be less assertive than dads, when we switch between being a playmate and an authority figure.

My mom would kick my a$$ in a heartbeat so I disagree. It depends on the parent. My ex has a hard time with my younger child. I have no problems because I have set a standard of conduct to follow.

hi.
false it depends on the parents some mom can be both and some dads can be both. there are the parents that just can not say no to there kids and that can be any parents it is not just one particular parent.

i think thats true...i never really thought of it like that. kids see the softer side of mom alot more than they do dad, so they dont really take mom as seriously.
