Colyton.
It's about 5 miles from the sea (via the River Axe or the Seaton Tramway). Has several decent pubs and is within easy access of the A35 (so you can escape) and Axminster.

Well here in south Dorset you've pretty much only got Bournemouth and Poole, neither of which is really a small town, they are both pretty big towns. There's lots of nice parts though that you can get houses in area's that are quieter. House prices are very expensive here though. It's best to look around, it depends on where you can afford. Word of warning, avoid Boscombe in Bournemouth, it's not a nice area at all. Most other parts are nice though. I'd suggest a trip down and explore, best thing to do. Make sure you look around Bournemouth and all the suburbs, same with Poole. You can also look Ferndown way, which is further from the sea and more towards the New Forest but is also nice. You'll get town enviroments in South Dorset, if your looking for a village enviroment, might be better sticking to Devon, although I do think there's some nice villages around Ferndown and Ringwood to, but they are further from the sea.

Don't be fooled by S. Devon's beauty.
I made the sort of decision you are about to make about 28 yrs ago. I wish I never had.
I won't go into the downside here, but suffice to say in retrospect I wish I had stayed put where I lived previously.
What the estate agents don't tell you when they are trying to make a sale is:
That we have the highest water rates in the country.
Although it look beautiful it is a trap, and very much behind the rest of the country.
S. Devon also has a lot of social problems, which no brochure will tell you about.
The days of rainfall is never ending.
Property is getting really expensive.
The salaries are low.
Not enough employment to go round.

Believe me Devon is 10 times better than Dorset. Villages around Exmouth & Torquay, both of which are on the south coast are lovely. For village life there is no better place in England than Devon.

Hi my mother move to Newton abbot a few years ago and in the summer the A38 was gridlocked after 9am, then when you did get to the coast finding somewhere to park was a nightmare.
The pay rates seemed to be lot lower than the rest of the country because there is less work.
But if you were thinking of a place to retire torbay or torquay look good to me

The South Hams is very beautiful but it's awfully expensive, especially around Chesnil and Portland.
You could try the outskirts of Weymouth, perhaps around Abbotsbury. That's stunning and quiet and an easy walk to a lovely sand beach. Don't know about prices, though...

Hmm.. Bournemouth or Poole would of been my first answers but they are not small towns...
Look for somewhere on the outskirts of one of them?
