The most important thing is do not let anyone tell you that your child has ADD or ADHD that doesn't not have MD behind their name

I believe that the average age to be diagnosed with ADHD is 5-7 years, because that is when kids start school. Their ability, or lack thereof, to concentrate on a single task becomes more apparant at this time. It is infinitely more common to see an ADHD diagnosis in boys than girls, since girls tend to be more reserved. I was diagnosed at age 5.

I would say the average age is 6-7. make sure a medical doctor does the diagnosis. Girls tend to have the inattentive type of this disorder. they have add. They are often overlooked at first because they simply suffer from inattention but do not pose a behaviour problem so the age for girls is probably higher. Medications need to be taken as required by the doctor and then they should be adjusted (dosage) and /or changed to accomodate the individual child. I also agree that there has been a period of overdiagnosis of this disorder, however, it is a real disorder and those people that suffer from it need to be given all the assistance that is available to them so they can be successful. (this does not go away when you become an adult)

my son was diagnosed at 4 yrs old-he would not take the capsules that they perscribed for him but I stopped giving them to him because he said they made him feel weird. Just because he would'nt sit still in preschool and he was the clown of the class they thought he had adhd---so I think a child has to be older to determine it-Jill R

Usually when they go to school, teachers are trained to recognize the signs of this problem.
