Louisiana has a unique heritage, as the ancestors of many of its citizens were French-speaking refugees from the British conquest of Canada some 250 years ago.

They were cut off from their French heritage and never had an English one. Arcadian became Cajun, a dialect comparable to Haitian Creole -- virtually a new language. This is a precious thing and requires preservation, but yes even as an accent in English it can be impenetrable to non-natives. The northern part of Louisiana shares its rural dialect with most of the South.

I'm not sure you're doing anything "wrong".
People who live in Louisiana can have a very heavy, unique accent. I personally love it. I am from this country and have a tough time understanding some accents myself!
It is a matter of getting used to the accent.

They do speak a different dialect (Cajun) of English. That perhaps could be why.
