I have a young fiesty male cat--about a year old. He's really a wild man most mornings, anxious to play and eat. In fact, if I don't watch him, he eats the other cat's food. But this morning, he is sleeping. When I opened the food, he didn't get up. This is very odd.. He won't play. He isn't purring. and he definitely missed breakfast. How worried should I be? The nearest vet is over 60 miles away. Should I rush him in? What possible reason could there be for this behavior?
Thanks for any thoughts.

I'd definitely call the vet unless you have changed food recently. Before you call, take a look in the litterbox and look for anything out of the ordinary, like loose or differently colored stool, more or less pee/clumps than usual, etc. That info can give the vet clues on what's wrong too, even from afar.

Any time an animal stops eating it means it is sick. Cats are usually really good at masking illness so the fact that his signs are so obvious means that there is a real problem. I think you are going to have to commit to the 60 mile drive and hopefully you can do some other errands too while you are out there. You should call your vet and give them an idea of what is going on. Maybe they will tell you that you can wait a little longer but I bet if his symptoms continue for the next day, they will tell you to bring him in.

Cats are creatures of habit. They like doing the same thing day in and day out. Even if they're feeling kinda icky, they'll make the attempt. If he's breaking his normal routine, to the extent that he's ignoring food, I'd get him to the vet as soon as you can. It sounds pretty bad if he won't even get up to get to the food.
As to what it might be, I'm not sure, since he's really young. Is he an indoors cat? He might've eaten something he shouldn't have. And if he's an outdoors cat, look to see if he has any bites on him.
Good luck! I hope it's nothing too serious.

Try getting a can of wet cat food. That may perk him up a bit. You can also get a heating pad and put a towel over it. He will really enjoy laying on it and it may make him feel better. If he doesnt eat within the next 24 hours I would call the vet and let them know what is going on. They may also give you more things to try. My cats LOVE tuna fish for a treat. See if you can also get some of that in him! :)

At least call the vet. They may have some ideas for you. If you have to take him in...then do so. He could be suffering. Alot of times when a cat is sick, you cant tell. And they cant tell you. If he is sick, then you will catching it early.
Goodluck!!
God Bless kitty!

cats will be just as picky as u let them....if u dont feed it, it will find food.....if it is really sick, the vet can usually do very little except take ur money and new cats cost a dime a dozen--so whats the worry..............its God's Plan.......let us pray......
