The money changers knew what they were doing was wrong and they were doing it anyway. The chief Priests and Pharisees and Sadducees knew they were controlling the people with rules and traditions that were not in the word of God. Hypocrits normally realize that they are hypocrits, they just don't like people telling them that they are. Most hypocrits think they have everyone fooled and they have mostly fooled their own self-righteous self.

I'm not certain the Bible says anything about anyone attempting to strike back. But, I would imagine that they didn't because of the shame they must've felt when Jesus' anger was kindled against those who would turn God's house into a "den of thieves".

get real, you haven't read the bible! Jesus NEVER whipped anyone! He got angry at them and turned the tables over adn their money and goods went flying in the air and HE yelled at them to stop and leave the Temple.

If they had been a bunch of carpenters or shepherds, they probably would have, but I'd think they were less physical sorts of people.
In any case there were temple guards and potentially roman soldiers, why were none of them called?

Maybe they didn't hit back because deep down, they knew he was right?

They might not have seen Him for who He was but had still heard of Him and His claims they either belived them or thought He was a crazy person, and were afraid to fight back.
