Anyone else have this illness? I was treated for IBS for many years but after a blood test my MD says it is Celiac Disease. He asked me if I eat a lot of wheat and I do. I love Taboule salad and he said that would be what is causing it. Can I eat cooked wheat? I'm really tired of being so sick so will cut out whatever I need to.

Celiac sprue is an immunologically mediated disease in genetically susceptible individuals caused by intolerance to gluten, resulting in mucosal inflammation, which causes malabsorption. Symptoms usually include diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Diagnosis is by small-bowel biopsies demonstrating characteristic though not specific pathologic changes of villous atrophy that improve with a strict gluten-free diet.

My cousin's wife has the same problem.

Basically you can't eat anything that has gluten in it. This includes wheat, rye, and barley. Other grains are OK, just make sure that you know that a food is "gluten free." Gluten, or gluten containing products are sometimes used as additives in many processed foods.

Apart from that, you might want to take some multivitamin-multimineral supplements. Celiac disease causes the intestinal lining to become inflamed after eating food with gluten in it; this makes your body less able to absorb nutrients.

It means you can't eat anything with gluten - gluten is in wheat, rye and barley. So it is best to stick to breads, cereal and pasta made from corn or rice. There are lots of alternatives nowadays. These sites have a lot of information, http://www.coeliac.co.uk/ and http://www.celiac.com/index.html Look out for wheat in some sweets and sauces too. There are books that list all the products that are gluten free.

This disease is in my family too and I've learnt that it is possible to avoid wheat and be very healthy.

Your doctor should be able to give you more information on this. There's lots of dedicated sites on the web also.

The short answer is avoid anything made from wheat as this would contain gluten, which you are allergic too. This would include bread, pasta, pizza, biscuits, unless specifically marked as gluten-free - your supermarket may carry a range of these products in a section.

Everything you eat must be made with rice flour. That means you need to read every single label of every item you pick up in the store. Also ask your doc for a referral to a dietician and she can help you with this. You may not eat wheat or it's byproducts in any form..........cooked or uncooked.
