I like downloading videos with Torrent programs, but they take up a lot of space, so i convert them to MPEG-4 formatt to shrink them. Is there a format to which i can shrink a video file so that it's smaller than MPEG-4, but retains it's quality? If so could you suggest a program that can convert files to that format? Thankx guys! 10pts

Hi,
I do video work both for offline and presentation on the web and have used many different compression formats MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, VCD, SVCD, DiVx etc. There are also many proprietary formats Real Media, QuickTime, Window Media etc.

No matter what format you choose there are always compromises to make regarding picture size and quality, audio quality and what equipment you intend to use for playback i.e playback on your PC or TV or OH Projector, Widescreen or HDTV etc.

You may find that in reality you can afford to sacrifice some picture quality (without anyone noticing) for reduced file size by using another format depending on what screen size you are using 320 x 240, 640 x 480, 720 x 480, 720 x 576 etc.

regards
Tony

I doubt it, unless you try MPEG-7, and even then you will lose some quality. All compression is lossy, so you may just be better off with the trustworthy MPEG-4 and a few data CD-Rs.
