Yesterday I burned over 500 calories at the gym and kept my diet down to just under 800 calories (too low I know). Today I want to work just as hard (eat a few more calories though). I am doing a thirty day strict diet and fitness to see how good of shape I can get in and how many pounds I can lose by April 3. (I am 47 years old, 5 foot 7 inches and 147 pounds...I want to be a fit 130 pounds) Encouragement please? I quit smoking two months ago (2 packs a day for almost 30 years) and have dont hardly anything for years.

Make sure you are eating 6 small meals a day, (lots of fruit and veggies) that will help keep your metabolism up and keep your body from thinking you are trying to starve. Also, make sure you get plenty of water.

And if you know what blood type you are, you might check out "Eat Right 4 your Type" I know that is the only diet I can really loose weight on. As long as I stick with it, the pounds just melt off, with little effort. But the diet is different for each of the 4 blood types.

First off congrats on quiting smoking!! My advice is to be careful on the quick fix diets. If you do it all at one time at the end of the 30 days you may have lost a lot of weight and feel more fit, but you will want to over endulge. Over endulging can cause you to actually gain more than you lost, quickly.
The best way to do a diet is exercise often, at least 30-45 mins a day, this can be walking, running, working out in the gym. It helps to have someone workout with you as well as doing it outside whenever possible. Also, eat portion sizes. I'd say anywhere from 1200-1500 calories a day could not hurt if you work out good. When you eat, only eat until you get full then quit and then eat again when you get hungry.

You are doing too much too fast. 800 calories is sickingly low. Your metabolism is slowing down tremendously because of it. The biggest mistake I see newbies do is that they lower their carbohydrate intake when they begin an organized exercise regimen. (Stay away from refined simple sugars, but you need to up your low glycemic carbs). Your glycogen stores (fuel for the muscle) are probably extremely depleted and it is only a matter of time before you quit.

Be more realistic. Aim for a pound a week. If you are losing more than a pound a week, then chances are you are burning off valuable muscle (having more muscle means an increased metabolism).

Aim for about 15 calories per pound of the ideal weight you wish to achieve. Stick to complex (low glycemic carbs). Get about a gram of protein per pound of ideal weight you wish to achieve. Get EFAs in your diet. Easiest way for me is adding flaxseed oil into a protein shake every morning. Make sure you lift weights. Stick to the core exercises (deadlifts, squats, bench press, pullups, dips, and overhead presses). Start off easy so your connective tissue, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage thicken. Build up you cardio for a few months so that you can get conditioned. After the conditioning phase, I'd suggest you pick it up where your goal in a cardio session to do intervals of running, cycling, or whatnot where your heart rate reaches at least 85% of its max (approx. 220-age*0.85). This type of cardio is called HIIT (high intensity interval training). Look it up on wikipedia for more information and examples.

Good luck to you. Take care of your body. You will look and feel younger by the end of this year. Less doctor visits, less money wasted on medications.
