You asked a very broad question, so I'll have to give you a broad answer. Sergeants are lower and middle management. Exactly what they do and how many people they supervise depends on rank and job. A Sergeant(E-5) is typically at the bottom of the totem pole. As a SGT in the Army, I was the 'gunner' of a cannon. I aimed the cannon and was second in charge of the gun crew of 10 people. A Staff Sergeant(SSG/E-6) was in charge. A Sergeant First Class(SFC/E-7) was in charge of a platoon of 4 cannon crews. A First Sergeant(1SG/E-8) was in charge of 2 platoons and an administrative and maintenance platoon.
Basically, officers make policy and Sergeants get the work done.

That is a very loose ended question, so to try and answer all of your questions here it goes, a Lance Corporal is only in the Marines, pay grade E3, a E3 in the Army is a Private First Class, they are merely workhorses and the highest on the chain of lower enlisted, a Corporal in the Army is a Non Commisioned Officer, the lowest ranking one. Pay grade E4 (more popular rank is Specialist at this rank), They have been recongnized for their leadership potential and can have the same jobs and responsibilities as a Sergeant. A Sergeant, (E5) is a leadership position, depending on the type of unit, As a Sergeant I was a team leader or assitant squad leader (in charge of 4-5 Sodiers within a Squad) if we had enough Staff Sergeants to fill the squad leader posistions (in charge of 8-10 Soldiers, a Squad), or a squad leader if not. Also, thats when you start taking on addidtional responsibilities, i.e. counselings, re-enlistment NCO, Retention NCO, EEO NCO, NBC NCO, and the additional dutie rosters like CQ and Staff Duty.
