It is very important. At home, u may eat the way u want but in front of outsiders, you must know how to eat in a decent manner as that will only show that u belong to a good & educated family.

In a civilised world, living in a civilised era, Table manners are very important--- because HOW we eat is as important as WHAT we eat!
We eat with grace, with consideration and kindness for our companions at the table, and by showing good manners!
Very important, because our food gets eaten and digested best when eaten in a harmonious, loving, kind atmosphere, NOT when there is tension, beligerence, and rough behavior towards others at the table!

Oh gosh!! Manners are very important. whether table manners or other social manners. They make a person more civilised and ideal. Coming to table manners, it is always a pleasure to dine with a person who has good table manners. It feels so irksome to eat with someone who eats noisily and soils the table linen etc.
So, it is very essential to have table manners and to use them to the fullest.

Very important... It should be such that ..all persons will enjoy the food in a pleasant atmosphere with good sense of aticacy and without allowing any hurting... unpleasant and unwanted comments ... It is a personality test in top post recruitments.
It is interesting and useful to make the life enjoyable too as the food we take gets converted to various ways of energy to our body and the mind must be fresh and fine while eating around the dining table..!!

Almost as important as the meal itself. It is a parents responsibilty to teach, from a young age, the proper table manners.
This is one of my pet peeves actually. I babysit my niece who is now five and during the summer (as well as Christmas break/Spring break/days off school) I also have her brother who is nine.
They have THE worst table manners EVER! Because......they have not been taught at home, what is right and what is not.
At home, they never sit down to a meal at the table. They eat wherever they want to. If its sitting on the floor...thats where they eat. If its sitting on the couch...thats where they sit. If its standing up, balancing on one foot, thats where they eat and it drives me CRAZY!
When they are with me......we end up going round and round, the kids and I. Because I make them sit down, use utensils and practice good table manners...using a napkin, placing it on their lap and actually wiping their hands and mouths on the napkin and not their hand or their sleeve. They are burping experts and think it is soooo funny to just let a burp fly really loudly! Their mom (my s-i-l) grew up in a somewhat Amish community and in the Ammish culture, it is apparently a compliment to the women who prepare the food to burp outloud. Well, thats all fine and dandy....but they are NOT Ammish...and neither am I!
My kids and I sit down together at the table every night to eat dinner. And my kids are not perfect by any means....but you can take them to a four star restaurant anytime and they will know how to act. I'm not saying there won't be accidents or something won't be totally right....but they still have been taught to sit down while eating......use their utensils, wipe their hands and mouths and if they do have to burp, they do it in a manner that doesn't bring attention to themselves.!!!!!!

Depends on where you're eating and who you're with. If you are eating by yourself at home, eat any way you like, the cat or dog isn't going to mind.
If you're eating with just family at home it's usually sorta informal; making eating noises is quite rude, licking your plate etc too, but few people are going to pay attention to every detail, if you put your fork down on the wrong side of the plate or fold a napkin wrong or something only very picky people will be bothered by that in an informal, home setting.
In fastfood places you can eat with your hands but eating noises or eating with your mouth open etc are still rude!
In a fancy restaurant, you may want to pay attention to all details.
