Hello, we need to tow my girlfriends car to the garage... it's 20 miles and we have a choice of roads - a hilly A road, with lots of roundabouts, junctions and traffic lights or a flat, direct motorway route. I've bought a decent tow-pole for the job and we plan to make the trip in the middle of the night.

Is it ok for one car to tow another on the motorway?

the towed car will be an old VW Golf manual gearbox - I've done some research and I'm sure its ok to flat-tow, but thanks for the warning.

It is perfectly find to tow a vehicle on the roads and in fact the person in the towed car does not even need a license and nor does the towed vehicle require a MOT or tax. Do not tow a automatic car this way as it while the gearbox. stick to a maximum of 40 mph and make that the lights on the towed vehicle work. If it is car with power steering/brakes etc then if the engine is not running will be difficult and dangerous.

nicely difficulty is I heard it replaced into against the regulation and now while you're towing you ought to use a fixed hyperlink via utilising a steel bar. the reason of the ban is right down to human beings utilising any previous rope and it coming loose inflicting injuries. I incredibly have had a verify and which you're actually not aloud to circulate over the towing decrease utilising a tow rope because it fairly is fairly a short-term use. additionally in case you have handed your try over 1997 you're constrained so look at the towing regulations for licence holders passing over 1997!!

I think you can only tow a car on a motorway if it has broken down and needs removing from the motorway.

As it is commonplace to see cars towing caravans and, indeed, other things, such as horse boxes, on the motorway, there can be no objection. However, you will probably hold up the traffic, so it could be an antisocial thing to do.

if its front wheel drive dont tow it with the front wheels on the ground or you will be needing a transmission. Ive done it twice and burned up the trans in both cars.
