Yep! It works OK - messy but OK - score the paper first to break the paint seal - you can but one of the tools for a few quid - on the whole though - the steamer should take it off without any problem

It sound like you have silk on the walls, and that is always more difficult to remove even with a steamer, as you will find the top layer will sort of peel off.

Best thing to do is to do big crisscrosses all over the paper, dont go mad and score thru to the wall, but just deep enough to cut.

Then when the steamer get goings and the steam soaks into these crisscrosses the paper will come off alot quicker.

Get and old spray type bottle, and fill up with diluted fabric conditioner for your window reveals and hard to get at places like switches etc.

Go to your local paint store and buy a tool called "Paper Tiger" and lightly score the paper with it again lightly cause you don't want to have to get rid of a thousand tiny holes in your sheetrock by skim coating. What this will do is allow the hot moisture to reach your glue resulting in the paper to be removed. Rent your steamer too it will save you time and will also help getting the glue residue off the walls which is VERY important if you intend to paint, good luck and take your time.

You're right the steam won't penetrate it. You need to buy a piercer. It's a round object with little slicers in it. It penetrates the paper just enough so that the steam will work better. You can buy them at any Home Depot or hardware store. You don't need to push hard with this thing just roll it all around the wall. It works really fast.

Avoid using a steam stripper where possible because it can pull plaster and ceiling paper off.

Take 60 or 80 grit sandpaper and scrub the surface. Use a brush and wash overpaper plenty of water, 4 or 5 times. Scrape using a scraper.

If you score/pierce through the paint, yes, a steamer will pentrate. Bear in mind, the steamer is the plasterers best friend.... unless you are very careful, you will 'blow' the plaster off the wall. Typically, anaglypta is used to mask bad walls...old walls with poor plaster. Thus, your plasterwork may be in bad condition, and you may welll blow it off with a steamer. Do it by hand, with a sponge,scraper...takes longer, but safer.

Make sure your plaster is stable first , if its dodgy a steamer will blow it off the wall , if it's ok then you'v still got to abrade the surface , you can get a scourer that fits in a drill , then it's just loadsa steam or soapy water and loadsa elbow grease !!
