I'm using an old PC and its Windows 98. To use i-tunes I need to update to 2000 or XP and I'm told XP is best. What is the cheapest and easiest way to do this. Is it a big job (installation) as I'm a middle aged technophobe...

it's not really diffcult to do but if you p.c is running windows 98 it probably isn't the quickest p.c in the world so it might grind to a halt after doing the upgrade. i'd probably upgrade to 2000 because it doesn't require a big spec. all you need to do is get a disc and put it in while in windows and keep press next to install. if you want a clean bulid which would be best but you will loss all the data which hasn't been backed up you put the disc in on the boot. you need to make sure your cdrom is a bootable device in the bios and that it is set to boot before the hard disc. To be honest you'd probably be better upgrading the whole p.c i do have a celeron 400mhz computer at home round windows xp which i would think would be a simalir spec as yours. I don't have this p.c on the internet it is basicaly just a jukebox and this runs slow as it is. i think you'll proabably need a slight quicker p.c to run the internet and itunes and xp.

Ignore "blessed_thang" comment if you are as you said a middle aged technophobe your unlikey to be able to get to grips with linux . And i'm guessing the reason you want itunes is becasue you've bought a ipod i'm not sure if ipod is linux compatiable although there probably has been a clever linux person that has managed to do it.

ok, 2 issues. XP won't paintings properly or paintings in any respect on an older workstation. in case you submit your computers stats (processor speed, reminiscence length, puzzling stress skill) we are able to work out if XP will paintings. the 2d area, you could purchase or detect a XP improve disk which will replace your gadget style ninety 8 to XP, yet I relatively advise you do no longer do this. quite, back up what records you desire to save and do an entire set up, meaning a reformat of your gadget. a 0.33 area could be do no longer even evaluate Vista given which you reported an older workstation, i'm ninety 9.9% advantageous your hardware won't help Vist OS.

Someone touched upon earlier with the age of your PC. You have to determine if indeed your PC meets the required specs for the update itself.

Get the model of your PC and google the name. Then get the specs and see if they at least meet the minimum requirements. If not it may be time for newer equipment that can be purchased used these days because many people upgrade and their PC's are perfectly fine.
The upgrade in software alone would be 99.00 dollars but occasionally you can get this at office depot or staples with a rebate.

You can download Windows XP off torrent sites but depending on the spec of your PC, Windows XP may crawl.

For a decent XP experience you need an 800MHz processor and 256MB of memory. Also the size and speed of your hard drive can affect performance.

If you can post your system spec we may be able to help more.

I think you will have the same troubles with XP that you would have with Linux. With XP you might discover you have to upgrade this piece of your computer and then that piece and then on and on and on. Linux is free for the download. Can you burn a CD after you download from the link below? If so, you can try runniing Linux from the CD. If you like it, install it. You will have to search for some of the answers after that to customize. This Linux has a wonderful community forum of people from all over the world that will help you.

That's how I upgraded my Win98.

It (XP) probably won't run on that PC - too old - you can try going to Microsoft and running the 'compatibility check' but don't hold your breath - 2000 might but it isn't that good - new PC time I think
