No, Fleas are fleas.....

Although there are many different species of fleas, the most common ones are:
Cat Fleas Ctenocephalides felis
Dog Fleas Ctenocephalides canis

What is the difference between Dog fleas and Cat Fleas?

Although one is called a dog flea and one is called a cat flea you won't be able to tell the difference without the aid of a microscope.

The most common flea found on dogs and cats is the cat flea.
It is a misconception that dogs only have dog fleas and cats only have cat fleas.
It has been reported that 95% of fleas found on dogs and cats are cat fleas

Dog fleas are rarely found in the United States.

While they have a different scientific name, the actual flea is the same on both cats and dogs.

Dogs: Ctenocephalides canis

Cats: Ctenocephalides felis

Both Dogs & Cats can catch fleas mostly while being outside. A huge carrier of the flea is none other than-the squirrel. They are all over yards, outdoors...fleas fall off and will attach themselves to the first living thing that comes it's way. While they can cause an infestation-they can also cause anemia and tapeworms! The tapeworm is achieved from the larvae a flea lays. When a dog or cat is grooming itself,,,and un-knowingly eats the larvae, it comes out of it's rear,,,looking like a piece of rice stuck to it's behind. I know it's really gross...but this is a true way to know if your animal has fleas...simply call your vet-they will give them a pill...that will rid of the tapeworms. However it will not kill fleas...You will need a monthly veterinary prescribed medicine for the fleas. Store bought ones are a waste of money. I hope I have helped you out.

Actually no they arent, same type of flea, but you have those fleas ad "sand fleas' which are what nip you at the beach lake ect. However you CAN Get rid of the fleas the same means, if your having a problem and worry about pesticides introduce garlic powder into the Food, it gives off a scent that Fleas dont like from the animal's glands th flea's referred name is Siphonaptera, though if you speak with a vet they will say your cat may have Ctenocephalides felis and your dog may have Ctenocephalides canis, truth be told its the same flea infesting one another, they just refer it as such to diagnose your animal (Personally I think saying "your dog has fleas or your cat has fleas is suitable no need to discriminate right? lol)

Whilst the fleas are from the same biological group, please bear in mind that the medication to treat them are very different. You must never use flea treatment intended for dogs on cats. I saw on an animal hospital programme where someone gave their cat a dog flea treatment by accident and the poor cat nearly died. The vet on the programme said this minor mistake can have serious consequences for the cat if veterninary treatment isn't sought immediately. Whatever pet you have, it's always best to buy flea and worm treatment from a vet.

Yes. Fleas are generally specialised to their hosts, although they can be very similar and may require a specialist to differentiate them. To complicate matters, some fleas are able to infest a different animal, eg cat fleas can live on dogs, and vice versa. Cat fleas will attempt to feed from humans, although they cannot survive in this way (human fleas are rather bigger). Many animals have their own associated flea species.
