Just tell them what the money went towards. Since you probably won't have each dollar earmarked who it came from when you spent it, keep track of what you spent your money on. Send your thank-you's appropriately:

If the gift was from a friend, let them know their money helped you have a great time on your honeymoon!

If the money was from great-aunt Edna, she will be pleased that you bought that bone china with her donation.

If the money was from your favorite aunt Deb, I'm sure she'd be happy to know that you are socking that money into savings for your down payment/addition/upgrades on the house.

...etc, etc. Think of each person and how THEY think YOU would enjoy spending their money. If you did something similar with some of your wedding money, let them know! Just be sure that their gift matches the thing you are thanking them for. (You don't want to thank aunt Edna for a place setting of bone china if she gave you $25; tell her it went towards a place setting. If she gave you $500, she could have bought you your whole china set, spread it out a bit; china and a display cabinet.)

When I wrote out my thank you notes I usually referred to a gift of money as a monetary gift, and tried to mention something we are enjoying or purchased because of the money that the person gave.

For example "thank you so much for the generous monetary gift, we're really enjoying the new dining room table we purchased!!"

I hope this helps!

I found this useful advice on thank you notes from Elegala.com. It provides thank you note etiquette and thank you note wording samples - http://www.elegala.com/stationery-thankyous.html

The article specifically addresses thank you notes for monetary gifts - saying "For monetary gifts, indicate how the money will be used; whether to mention the amount given is optional. " It then goes on to give specific wording samples.

Dear Anne (or whoever sent you the gift)

Thank you so much for your kind gift of a toaster (or whatever they have given you) My husband and I are very grateful for your thoughtfulness, every time we make toast we will think of you.

Best wishes

Mr and Mrs X

"Dear_____, ______ and I are so happy you could be part of our special day (if they didn't attend, let them know they were missed). We are so grateful for your generous gift, as we are saving for a down payment on a home (or some other big ticket purchase), and this has gone into a special account for that purpose. Thank you for being a part of all this. Love, _____"
