Try looking at the little ads you can put up in Morrisons, or other shops. People who advertise there may well be a bit more honest than the semi-crims & small-time traders who advertise in Auto Trader & E-bay etc. Plus, they'll be local.
Look for evidence they've actually owned the car for a good while & be very suspicious of ' I'm selling it for a friend / I bought it for my wife & she doesn't like it'. If I had a pound for every time I've heard that one...
It's very easy to buy a car at auction for £500, valet it for £50, then try & sell it for £1000!

Do what I did, go round to your local garages and ask if they have any cheap trade in vehicles. Often they will not want to sell them on the forecourt because they only sell cars in the £3k to £5K bracket. Therefore you can often get a deal. I got an M reg nissan primera with 90k on the clock and a full service history up to 70k for 550 quid with twelve months mot and i have had it a year and re mot'd it last month (cost 105 quid for MOT and a service at my local backstreet garage) Thats what I call cheap motoring. PS you cant go wrong with an old primera, v v good value for money

Yes, definitely, I am actually doing the same thiing, I am only spending up to 1k for my second car, I have had a look at Nissan Micras (1996) and also several Escort 1.4, because I want to pay less road tax. This seems to be the natural market prices for these models, I am more incline into getting the Escort, since it is a bigger car and feels more solid, don't get me wrong, both are reliable, however you may also want to look at Renault Clio Automatics. i search for cars on Autotrader's website, I wouldn't get one from ebay, since the conditions vary too much. Good Luck

Of course it's possible...there are a lot of decent second hand cars out there for under 1k....just shop around....check the local newspapers...or you can even find very good deals online...
I once bought a Fiat Uno for £550 from a private, it was running very well and never gave me a problem...
Good luck with your search, ciao!

Have a look in the classified section of your local newspaper. There should be quite a few in there. As long as you know what you are looking for when viewing cars, you should be able to sort the good from the bad.

You will be astonished what you can pick up in auctions - that's where eBay and newspaper car sellers often pick up their vehicles (1 careful owner, 6 complete ****holes). Take someone who knows about secondhand cars - you may find incredible bargains on left hand drives (for example).

Mine is for sale, 1995 VW Golf, never had a problem with it since I bought it new.
I'm only asking £900.
Low mileage, one careful lady owner since new.
Downside - it does get a bit shaky at over 95mph but it's always been like that.
