Hi, Im Hindu and i would like to answer the doubts expressed(albeit good naturedly ) by some posters here.
It is indeed ok to wear a tattoo of any Hindu god/goddess, but some Hindus might take of fence if it were to be on ..well..kinds embarrassing terrain.lol.u know what i mean,:), or if some people wear slippers with the pictures of hindu gods on them(Yes some companies make slippers with the pictures of hindu gods on where u put ur feet on.....its sickening that anyone would be so insensitive/ignorant enough to buy such a slipper, let alone make it...its kinda like walking on crosses)
Hinduism has no hierarchy not "set rules" as many other religions have. its the most tolerant and all-inclusive religion out there. Hindus can pretty much do-say anything. and there is no "religious police" to enforce Hinduism. I can say that "there is no god" and still be a Hindu. and believe it or not,; if i say there is no god. Hindus will not get offended, cos some branches of Hinduism are inf act atheistic. Hindus believe that as "all rivers lead to the ocean", all paths lead to the same goal. hence they do not see why people should fight/argue over religions or ideologies...for Hindus these those arguments are examples of childishness. Hindus do frown upon folks who keep on saying "my religion is right, and all the others are wrong"..after all, we of the secular modern age would agree with them on those points; cos...anyone who makes comments against other religions/paths is obviously not mature enough.
oops..back to the topic. yea the bottom line is, feel free to wear the tattoo:) and may the power of the goddess flow through you.:)

At least you actually know who Saraswati is to the Hindus. I personally do not think it is good to take the symbols of other cultures. I used to work with for a Hindu family. One white American woman came to our restaurant with an "om" symbol from the Hindu religion tattooed on her lower back. The Indians were clearly offended. I would ask Hindus and Sikhs before you do that. I am not sure how they feel about tattoos in general and am also not sure what they think of religious tattoos. I currently work for a Sikh family in a different city. Both families seemed to be ok with my tattoos and they like my Virgin Mary tattoo but I have no idea what they might think about a tattoo using their religious iconography especially on a person of another religion. I can not remember ever having met any Indian with a tattoo, just women with Henna artwork. Please ask Hindus and Sikhs so that you avoid accidentally offending people.

I am a Hindu and find no offense to this at all. You see, the beauty of the Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) is that it is an almost all inclusive faith. God is known by many different names and has many different forms, Saraswati being one of them. Hindus accept the Christian god and Jesus as just another path ppl use to find the Ultimate Reality.
By tattooing Saraswati on you, you are showing respect to anothers religion. That's not saying that you are Hindu, but rather you have an understanding and respect of the faith. There is an old saying that all are born Hindu... they just choose different paths to get to God!
You've obviously done your research. Just remember Saraswati is not just a pretty Goddess, or a symbol of music, literature, and wisdom. She has a spiritual meaning to many. If you are getting that tattoo because you like what She stands for, then I wouldn't recommend getting it. If you get the tattoo because you respect Her and understand that She is one of the many forms of God, then by all means!
Good luck!

RE:
Hindu Tattoo?
I've been thinking about getting a tattoo of the Hindu Goddess Saraswati. I've been doing a lot of research on her and I think she's amazing, however I don't follow the Hindu religion and I was baptize as Catholic. Do you think that's wrong?

For a long time, I wanted a Ganesha tattoo too (it was actually an aum that looked like a Ganesha... Really cute) but ended up deciding not to get it because - like you - I'm not Hindu. Unlike you, however, I didn't have a deep love for all it represents, which is why I think you should definitely go for it. As long as it's meaningful, I think it's a wonderful idea. Thank you for doing it, since I didn't! =)

No, its alright. I'm not religious, but would hope that you at least will make the tattoo be non-offensive. If it is good artwork, it doenst matter what the tattoo is. Thats what tattoos are truly about anyway, artwork.

Like you said, it's no biggie. I've wanted to get an ink of Buddha's face, but I too am also a Christian (Roman Catholic... almost every Filipinos are). However, for me, RELIGION DIVIDES PEOPLE. we all believe in one supreme being, who comes with different names depending on the religion. so, if you're gonna get a Ganesha tattoo, get it! at least your tattoo has a wonderful meaning. don't worry about what other people think.
