soft toothbrush with soft nylon bristles. brush at an angle - the aim is to massage the gums too. time yourself....do every tooth...keep going for two minutes. use a tooth paste that contains fluoride. and floss / use interdental brushes. after a week or so of using them every day your gums should not bleed. this means they are happy!
mouthwash is up to you....unless for gingivitis/high fluoride content prescribed by dentist most are a con....

They say it doesn't matter - up and down or round and round - the key is the time and care. You need to stay and brush teeth of approx 1 1/2 mins - taking care to brush the front and back of every tooth. Then the most important part - FLOSSING!!

You should brush up and down or in a circular motion. This way it helps get underneath the gum lines, where most plaque is located. You should also floss, usually before you brush your teeth. You should probably also use a mouth wash or a rinse.

Also get a good loop type tongue scraper, the tongue is porous and its amazing how much crud you can clean off it sometime. Brushing your tongue does not do much.
