There is nothing wrong with the Grooms mother wearing black, however, if the wedding is during the day then thats a bit too formal.
But if it is in the evening then its totally appropriate.
The mothers of the bride and groom dressing accordingly is an old tradition and its important to make your MIL feel comfortable. However if you are really bent on the light colors...talk to her and mention the look you want for your wedding or bridal party and for the photographs...she might reconsider if she thinks she will stand out like a sour thumb with the black ensemble.

We are using gold & cream with some hot pink as our wedding colors, my mother is wearing brown, my fiance's mother is wearing purple.
I personally think the purple will stick out like a sore thumb, but it's not worth worrying about. Black is a formal color. One of my grandmothers is wearing black actually.

I think the bride's mother is gonna clash for starters! I think black can look really stylish - even at a wedding. Maybe team it with cream or pink accessories.

I agree that they should color coordinate and although black goes with everything, I dont think it would look that great if she was wearing a back dress for a wedding with a light color scheme. She would stick out like a sore thumb and also look like she was in mourning. I think she should pick another color.

I apologize and this isn't an answer to this Q. This is regarding your tile Q. I have traveled extensively for what work I do, and though I don't live next door I might still be able to advise at least.

My mom wore black to my wedding and looked stunning. This isn't a big deal....I'm sure you have TONS of other things to worry about!!
Listen...this is supposed to be the happiest time of your life. Don't sweat the small stuff...now, if she wanted to show up naked or in jeans...then I'd say you had a problem!!!! Good Luck!!!!

I say let the lady wear what she wants. I'm getting married in 2 months, and I would never dream of telling or suggesting what my mother in law wear. It is your day, but it's her body and her poragative.

Not at all, why should they? They aren't part of the bridal party, so they can wear what they like. I don't think you should restrict them to wearing only matching colours.
