The least expensive way to copyright is through the Library of Congress, Registrar of Copyrights.

They have a form, (forget the name, sorry) that you can use to copyright any original music and/or lyrics.

I'm a songwriter and have done this many times myself.

If you have more than one piece of music, you can get around this by placing all your music under one title...such as "Songs of the MidWest," or "Songs of my web page." I've sent as many as 12 different songs under one copyright by this method, it's like calling all your songs one album title, rather then listing each individual song.

Simply contact the Library of Congress website where you can print out the needed forms.

It isn't free, though....they recently raised their rates, but if you truely want protection of any original material, this is something you must do. I believe they charge about $45 a submission?

There is no "free way," such as mailing yourself the mp3's and never opening the envelope, that will stand up in a court of law if someone steals your work. http://www.copyright.gov/

If you wrote the mp3 file and it is original work you automatically have a copyright. There is no way to stop others from getting a copy of the file as all computers browsers have a cache and it may be taken from there and used.

if you post a file to your website, you can also write a script to block right clicking of files.....as far as copywriting the actual mp3, unless you wrote it you can't....you can copy protect it with built in tools in XP and Vista.....just change the settings of the mp3 while it still resides on your pc then when you upload it the same copyprotection will transfer with it.
