I've never seen an asian or black person with downs syndrome? Is it a 'white' man's disease only? And if so, why do asians and african americans not get it

I live in Australia. Wouldn't class either race as being the minority here though. My apologies if some find the question racist or offensive. It was not meant to be, just asking a question.

I've seen this question a number of times, I don't take offense to it, but I will say that Down syndrome occurs in all ethnic populations, however, there may be some cultures that are more likely to (sadly) terminate a baby with a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome. I know some countries still practice the completely unnecessary habit of institutionalizing children with Down syndrome.

Most likely, in your case, it's just a matter of not being in the same place at the same time. My son has DS and I know lots of families of all different cultures who have children with DS.

One thing though....Down syndrome is not a disease. It is a genetic anomaly. It can't be "caught".

My guess is you are staying in an area where the blacks and asians are the minority. Try traveling to Asia or Africa and you will see charity organization set up for the unfortunate with down syndrome.

Fortunate and unfortunate stuff happens to everyone, irregardless of their race. God is fair.

there is a genetic pre-disposition and higher rate of caucasians with downs because of genes and geography. More recently I would have to say that the delay of having babies to a later age means an increased likelihood. If you see in asian/african american culture, it is more common to have children sooner than later.
