Legally, you can't. If you have a system restore disc from an earlier pc that came with xp installed you could use that as long as its the only pc running that copy, or you could transfer a hard drives contents that is running xp onto the hard drive running vista (either ghost it or do a data transfer) then activate it.....but the big question here is, why? If you have a pc that came with Vista pre-installed why take a step backwards? Is it the interface? Programs not running right? Hardware conflicts? All of the major complaints about Vista are based primarily on fear and misunderstanding.......most people who have upgraded to Vista find that the way its setup is totally different from what they are used to and thus they don't know how to navigate through everything and get frustrated and confused......there are several online training courses to show you how to use VIsta to its potential and also how to run your other programs on it.....Vista does have the functionality of running older programs just like XP and 2000 and even ME with the compatibility option....if you just don't like the way it looks, there are several skinning programs where you can change the view to look and act like XP, or even older versions.
Short answer to your question is no you cannot downgrade to XP without paying for it.
