When A bird "sits" on a tree branch, it is actually grasping it with thier feet. A bird's rest position is designed so that when it is resting, the tendons in it's feet are pulled tight, creating a pretty secure perch. In stormy weather, a bird can "hunker down" a little more, makeing it's grasp even stronger.
