sunnis- believe that prophet Muhammad (S.A.V) was Allah's messenger.
shi'as- believe that Ali was supposed to be the prophet . they believe that there was a line of 12 imams (religios leaders) appointed after Ali whereas the sunnis dont
Sunnis and shi'as have very little differences. for instance, the way we (sunni's) pray is completely different than the prayer of the shi'a. the main difference is the awknowledgment of the righteous messenger.

In Islam all over the world They agree about the oneness of God They follow the same book - Quran(same words and letters all over the world). They follow the same prophet Muhammad . offer their prayers five time a day. fast in the month of Ramadan.Give charity (Zakat) which is the poor-due on the wealth of the rich go for hajj, pilgrimage to Mecca ...but they may have differnt opinions not on the basics
Those who follow some sayings and views of Ali (one of the early muslims leaders), as the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad , are called Shia. Shia means a partisan (party of Ali) and it started more as a political party to help Ali in his conflict with his political adversaries.
About 90% of Muslims are Sunni, the word Sunni is based on the word Sunnah which is an Arabic word means the Prophet's Doctrine. Sunnis believe in (GOD) as the One Creator and Mohammad is His last and final Messenger.
but you have to know that the sects in islam not like the sects in other religions in other religions1- they can change in their books for example the Catholic Bible contain 73 books while the Protestant Bible has only 66 in Islam no one can change any thing There is not even one word of difference between two Arabic Qur'ans, anywhere in the world. There has been no disagreements in history among Muslims as to what should and should not be in the Qur'an
The Sunnah or Hadith consists of the teachings, sayings, and actions of Prophet Muhammad. This information was meticulously reported and collected by his Companions. It is essentially an elaboration of the Qur'anic verses that shows how they are to be implemented in one's daily life ALLthe true muslims agree about that

Sunna is the first large group and Shia is the second largest denomination of the Islamic faith after Sunni Islam. Shias adhere to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.) and the religious guidance of his family (who are referred to as the Ahl al-Bayt) or Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s descendents known as Shi'a Imams. Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s bloodline continues only through his daughter Fatima Zahra R.A. and her husband Ali ibn Abu Talib, who alongside the Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s grandsons are among the Ahl al-Bayt ("people of the house [of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.). Thus, Shi'as consider Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s descendents as the true source of guidance while considering the first three ruling Sunni caliphs a historic occurrence and not something attached to faith.
Differences of Shia and Sunni traditions
Because Islamic law is based partly on the hadith, Shia rejection of some Sunni hadith and Sunni rejection of some Shia hadith means that the versions of the law differ somewhat. For example, while both Shia and Sunni pray five times each day, some of the prayer times differ. Shia do not believe that there is a set time for As'r and Ish'a prayers, and therefore, they are prayed together with the Thu'hur and Mugrib prayers, respectively. Likewise, Shia do not perform non obligatory prayers like Tar'raweeh, which is prayed during Ramadaan.
Also another issue of difference between the sects is that Nikah Mut‘ah or "temporary marriage" which is not forbidden for the Shia because it is found in a number of Shia traditions that the practice is permitted. There are Sahih Shia traditions which maintain that mut'ah is forbidden but these are dismissed as they contradict other narrations on mut'ah which were deemed more acceptable. Many Shia discourage the practice of Mut'ah, but maintain that it is permissible.
The Shi'a persist in Tawassul, often directed to members of lineage of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.) such as Hazrat Ali R.A. and Imam Husayn R.A. or Shi'a imams or saints. The Salafi school of the Sunnis condemn this as Shirk In al-'Ebadah .
Finally, The differences are tolerable.. Even in christianity you'll find Arthodox, Catholic, etc... They're both Muslims..
The rage between the two parties is of political nature. and must be stopped for the sake of Islam and Humanity...

Sunni and Shi'a are the two main factions of Islam. There's a long, tedious history of how it became two factions but suffice it to say it's like the difference between Protestants and Catholics, etc.
There are certain differences in certain procedures like the method of prayer or the head religious figures. There are also some differences in marriage, inheritance and other rituals. But yes- both are Muslims.

Old school Muslims and new school Muslims. Shia being the latter like Iran, with women in government positions and a little more progressive than say Saudi Arabia where they believe in Sharia law which is like cutting off hands for stealing and stoning adulterers and things of that sort.

its based on the issue of the prophet (pbuh) grandson.
shia muslims beleive he should have been the first caliph (after the prophets death) hence they disregard the first three caliphs
conversely, the sunni muslims believe the first three claiphs were right, and consider the prophets grandson to be the 4th caliph.
also many other differnces in general beliefs too.
if u want to know more, i suggest u should read up on it
