or is it ok to do it by text?

I feel that if you have been intimate then you should do it face to face!
this makes it more real and makes you stick to the decision, don't you agree?
Text messaging is cowardly and also it can leave the door open, for those who are players???????

Ending a relationship via sms (or email, or fax, or phone or any way except face to face - excluding the possibility that someone is thousands of miles away then the phone may be okay if it is a short term relationship) is unacceptable and disrespectful. Even if its you doing the breaking up and the person has been a real d!ckhead to you, don't sink to their level.

Anyone who sinks this low isn't worthy of your time and attention anyway, so if you have any nagging doubts about whether or not you should let the person go then being broken up with like this will confirm for you they were never worth it in the first place.

If on the other hand if you want to break up with someone and you think they may actually freak out and you fear for your safety, then having someone standing close by may help, or sending them a letter explaining why you are doing it this way may be acceptable. But a quick sms - no way.

Yes I agree, you need to deal with this one face to face. That way you can chat about the reasons and you can actually talk to the person. Also in that way you can minimise the shock to the other person, and taht is more thoughtful and caring. After all if you have had a meaningful relationship, it is important that you show respect in the breaking-up. I was dumped by phone 3 wks ago now, after 18 mths together with a guy. I got such a shock I couldn't eat for 4 days and I had to take 2 days off work. It was so hurtful. It just shows the immaturity and lack of respect of that guy I was with and I am so sorry for ever getting involved with him and being good to him for the 18 mths. Meet up and chat about the break-up.

I agree that you should do it face to face, because that shows that person that you are serious and your decision is final. Text messaging is cowardly, but you can take that route if you don't want to hear the reaction to the break-up. But the best way to do it is either face to face or either over the phone.

Yeah! it should be face to face! it will also ensure total closure!
And if it's only through text messaging, well it was really a cowardly thing to do! Stand up for the decision and be a man/woman and say it to his/her face!

Never Text messaging, that is so cowardly. ( Sly Stallone did that, but he landed up marrying her, so) Face to face is the only way to make it stick and make a person feel they did it the right way. Hurtful as it may be its the only way....

Depends on what you both believe. If you want to hurt him, do it by text. To humiliate him, do it by email... Especially if he's unreasonable.

If he's a reasonable guy and you respect each other, talk to him face to face and don't expect it to be pleasant.

I agree. I have only broken up with someone once and it was face-to-face. It's easier to see the expressions etc.

you should definately do it face to face, unless you're in a long dist thing. then its ok to do it on the phone. Either way you ahve to do it live, one on one. Out of respect to the other person.
