It will probably be easier to train your dog than to train you.
First remember its a dog not a human. He knows nothing about your carpet or your schedule, or the fact that he is pooping in a place he is not suppose to poop. He just had to GO! The fact that you are unhappy about where he goes, in his perspective is... well, your problem. He has no idea why a box of dirt is preferred over your rug. You probable plopped him in the box of dirt and demanded him to "GO". An if he went or not he still has no clue what that box of dirt is for or why you plopped him in it.
Try this, plan a couple days when you know you will be at home and can devote full time to training him. Clip his leash to your belt loop and go about your day. Treat him and praise him for every little behavior that you are please with. ie playing with his favorite chew toy quietly at your feet, following you nicely when you walk around, etc. Just use your regular puppy food and hand feed him.
He is attached to you and has your undivided attention and praise. He has to look to you for food, water etc. You are in complete control. Any and all mistakes are YOURS!
Keep in mind puppies are growing and their bladders are stretching and very small. The younger they are the more ofen they go. He will be most likely to need to go after meals and when he wakes. It is your job to CATCH this need and quickly take him to his pee spot. Then treat and praise.
If you see him with his nose down sniffing he is gearing up. Calmly and quickly take him to his pee spot. If he doesn't make it do not react in any negative form. After all...YOU are in control and it is YOUR fault. Just do not treat him. And next time try to get him there in time; praise and treat him. He will beging to get the picture that peeing in his pee spot is just wonderful and gets him treats and praise. Not peeing there gets him nothing.
If you see him peeing and start yelling etc. he will quickly think you have strange and frightening urination issues and he will learn to hide from you to pee.
It will take several lessons....more than several as he doesn't speak "HUMAN" yet, or have any concept of "poo is Bad!" And when he enters puppy puberty, he will continue to test you to see if you are still serious and really paying attention and still care about where he pees.
The leashing technique is also very successful for several behavior problems. You are the pack leader and he wants to please you. But for him to learn what you want, you have to reinforce over and over , by being vigilant, consistant, and patient. It is your job to CATCH behaviors good or bad and react in a way that teaches the pup what you want him to do.
After two days and nights of being leashed together. You will know your puppy better and know what he is up to when his little nose is pointing to the floor. And best of all you will gets lots of happy licks and tail wags when he realizes that he has made you happy. He will begin to tune into you and you into him.
If leashing is impossible you can do this with crating too. Best is a combination of the two. Good luck and enjoy the process. PS :buy paper towel in bulk and invest in a spray bottle of Urine Gone or any similar product which actually breaks down the urine spot using bacteria.

Dogs don't go on dirt or litter like a cat does. It does it naturally on grass. Take him out and often, you have to be fair because you can't expect him to hold that long.Forget this idea about newspaper training. Most times, it wont work. Out is where it's at.

I had a schnauzer, he was my first & only dog, & it was nearly impossible to potty train him. I tried lots of suggestions in books etc, but what finally got him going outside on his own, was when a friends schnauzer was out doing her business. He then went & sniffed around, & that made him go right away. See...us women even have to potty train you boys. (boy if we could only get the toilet seat thg right & flush when youre done, wed all get a treat!)

Take him out side and don't watch him but ignor him or he make a game of it. Just put him back on the grass. Treats when he gone.

YOU NEED TO LET IT GO OUTSIDE BUT IF THAT IS NOT AN OPTION TRY "PEE PADS".JUST REMEMBER THAT THEY ARE SO SMALL THAT THEY HAVE SMALL BLADDERS AND NEED TO GO MORE OFTEN THAN BIGGER DOGS.GOOD LUCK ,I'VE BEEN THERE!
