My fiance and I just got us a puppy. He is part boxer part redbone coonhound. We got him 3 days ago and he had just turned 6 weeks old. Now that you have the background here is my questions/concerns. Since he is still so little and the nights are still pretty cold here I'm keeping him inside. The problem we are having is that my fiance works days and I am currently working nights and we are trying to figure out how to adjust the puppy to our schedules and keep him from "crying" at all hours. I understand that he isn't used to being alone etc. but I have tried everything that has worked with my past pets with no success. Also I was wondering how early is too early to start training (as far as sit/stay/lie down) and what are some of the best methods of house training? My dad usually handled those parts of the deal so I'm new to the whole training aspect. ANY help is appreciated!!! Thanx!!!

He is actually more redbone than boxer....If I remember correctly mom was a boxer and dad was redbone.

We got him from a shelter so that's why we went ahead and got one so young. I am a light sleeper and suggested that idea to my fiance but he doesn't like the idea of the puppy sleeping with us. I figure I'l just be sneaky about it since I'll be sleeping during the day and I'll let the puppy sleep with me. I have noticed over the weekend that when the puppy and I were on the couch all day he wasn't as restless as he is when I'm not around. I had thought about leaving a shirt of mine with him since he seems to be more comfy with me than my fiance but I wasn't sure how well that would work.

To clear something up right off the bat from Killa Cam's post - Boxers are not hard to train. But they DO require a creative trainer, repetition won't work for them.

Second: he's part Boxer. You cannot keep him as an outside dog unless you live in a temperate climate.

He's six weeks old, he's really lonely right now. Start crate training him if you haven't. Set him up with a hot water bottle and a clock that ticks. It calms them considerably. Maybe play a radio at a low volume for him.

Eight weeks is a really good time to start training. You can probably start introducing him to a light weight collar at this age and teach him basic house manners, but that's it. House training methods that work best are those that involve crate training the dog.

Well, if your puppy is only 6 weeks old, he was still pretty young to be separated. Many experts and breeders agree that 8 weeks is better. With that in mind, try putting a warmed blanket in puppy's bed (just throw it in the dryer). Also, a ticking clock in the room he is sleeping in may help soothe the puppy. Puppy kindergarten usually starts at eight weeks, but you can start on your own at that age too. Treats are good incentives. Move the papers the puppy uses to go on closer and closer to the door he will use to go outside. then move the papers outside for a few days until he learns where to go. One suggestion is to use a small area for going so on cold are rainy days, you don't have to go far. And if you have a backyard, you only have to clean up a small area. Good luck.

It takes an adjustment time for puppies...especially that young. do you have crate for him? I recommend one that is made almost like a cage and has door on it with a tray on the bottom for easy cleanup. I have found if the puppy can see you he feels less lonely. If you are currently working nights play with the puppy during the day.. take him out to potty at least every 30 minutes to an hour. watch him closely. if he starts sniffing get him out the door. if there are times you cannot watch him closely put him in his crate. but remember pups that little to not have control over there bowels or bladder so he needs to be taken out every 2-3 hours if possible. if he gets plenty of exercise during the day hopefully it will help him get on schedule. i have always let my pups sleep with me at night when they would cry just so i could get some sleep but only do this if you are a light sleeper and will wake up when they start squirming or sniffing or you will have a mess to clean up. I hope this helps! good luck with your puppy
