He is generally well and appears happy - we have another dog and they get on well. Nothing has changed which could have caused stress etc - as far as we know. We just don't know why he has started messing. Any advise?

maybe it's just old age. People do it when they get older. It could be he can't hold it in long enough to go outside. My grandma was pretty happy and fit, but at the age of 95 she started pooping her pants

It could be old age, bladder infection (depending on what kind mess), or maybe even just for attention. If you recently changed food or you are giving table scraps or too many treats, that can do it too. Take him to the vet and check it out, or get up in the middle of the night and let him out, it sucks, but it's part of the responsibility of having pets. And, by the way, rubbing their nose in it doesn't work, it's just cruel.

Time for a vet check. Anytime a dog who is house broken starts "messing" in the house its cause for concern. Very often its caused by an underlying medical issue. Once that is cleared up they go back to their happy house broken selves.

9 could be very old depending on the breed and the organs could be shutting down. You need to have the dog checked out at the vets if nothing else has changed. It could also mean bacterial infections.

It is stupid and cruel to rub the dog's nose in the poo, since for 9 years he got it right, so he knows what he's supposed to do and the fact that he can't make it makes him sadder than it makes you. He is just old and can't hold it for so long. get him a puppy training pad, and show him to do it there, perhaps it will work for the night. And consult a vet.

Rubbing a dogs's nostril in excrement does no longer help in any respect, and is seen merciless by technique of many professionals. also, in no way hit a dogs! even as a dogs has only waked up from sleep, has only eaten food, or only performed confusing, take the dogs outside on a leash, because it truly is even as the dogs needs to pee and poop. even as the dogs does it, praise him! attempt this continually, and your dogs will study ok.

He could be having problems controling his bladder - now that he's older, you have to let him out more regularly. There are other things - bladder infection, urinary tract infection. Have him checked out by a vet to be safe.

And a note: never rub a dog's face in it's mess. It doesn't teach them anything but fear. Rather let him out more often than punish him for something he may not have a say in.

Yes, you should take your dog to a vet. when dogs get that age they sometimes have problems. You may want to change dog food. You can try a brand made by Nutro, that is what I feed my dog and I get good results from using it.
