Be highly critical of it almost always and he'll hopefully clean up his act.

It would probably be a huge chore for him to try to get his fingernails clean every night after work just to get them dirty again the next day. You have to decide whether this is really all that important to you. It would be reasonable of you to expect him to clean them well before he cooks for you or touches you intimately, but not very reasonable to expect him to keep them clean every time he sees you. But, you could get him a nail brush and a men's manicure set (doesn't have to be fancy, you can get one at the dollar store) and tell him that you figured he could use it. You could also give him a manicure yourself, which he might enjoy, and which might help you understand how challenging it is to clean his nails.

Have you ever worked on a dirty, greasy car? Have you ever taken care of outdoor plants? Have you ever worked with dirt? Try it and then you will have an understanding of how difficult it is to keep your fingernails clean. Dirt and grease are not easy items to remove from under your nails. I work with dirty cars all day, every day. I also work with dirt and mud. It can take several days to remove all the grease and dirt from under and around the nails. You might want to watch this guy work and see what he deals with to get an understanding of why his nails are dirty. I would expect him to clean them before we cook, eat or become intimate. If dirty nails are all that it takes to stop a relationship from developing, I would move on. Find a guy with clean nails.

Dear Cleanly,
I also am like you with my hygiene, but after reading the whole of your letter, I say give him some props for smelling good and yummy with clean hair and body! AS a retired landscape designer myself for 20 years, it would take a magic wand to get my nails clean some days and I am a woman! Even soaking and scrubbing after some work days could not get all the dirt out of my nails unless I cut the nail to the quick, and that is painful! But the beauty I created in that lawn was so worth the "Hygiene" troubles and for 99% of the time, men found it charming, both my job and my nails.
Personally, a man with polished nails and hands that are softer than mine gives me pause. Even a Corporate man needs to do some kind of manual labor or he is just too Met-U-Sexual for me. (Please take no offence to any really groomed men, love you too, just not my style) I prefer to be the more prim over my man thank you, and do not want to fuss over my nail products and night creams with my husband at the end of the night....Rather I enjoy the feel of a working mans hands on my body, but mind you, not a stinking one!
So my advice, you can tell if he tried to clean up his nails, but did not have time to cut them all off. IS his kisses tasty and other parts you kiss? IF yes, now that is good hygiene!
New partner in waiting, Love to get feedback on my opinion.

Yeah! understand you - i had the same problem with my boy-friend! i took him to the manicurer with me - we both had our nails done and then i was very nice and tender to him and said - that he is almost perfect and i like and appreciate everything from him and there is only one thing that should be changed a bit ( and i said i can helo with it) - it is his nails. so he understood it ( of course he was a bit uneasy at first minutes) i kissed every his finger after this manicure - so now he knows how great it is and what advantage he gets from his clean fingernails!!!!
Good luck. Do nto forget to say that anyway you like him.

ask him politely and as if you CARE him....the same time you should understand that 'he is a car mechanic' and not a teacher or some sort of white collar employee...personally speaking ..have you ever notice a mechanic.. how he repair and fix a vehicle and how much time it requires? if he is a good mechanic then his hands always busy.....then how could it be possible for him to clean every time he fix a vehicle....you could ask him to wear gloves also for to clean and trim the nails...show him ..that you care.

my man's a mechancic but washes his hands all the time, and his nails are always clean. maybe sometimes after he fixes something they get dirty, so he's cleaning them right away.
So it's not the job, it's the guy. I'll bet he's really good with his hands too, so don't scare him away. Tell him you like his hands, but would like him to clean his nails after working and before seeing you.
