SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. This involves asphyxiation and suffocation and the inability to breathe or some apneic episode. That's why it's a good idea to use a baby monitor esp at nights.

The answer in the U.S. is accidents. Various accidents. Fires, car accidents, drownings, accidental suffocation with too much blankets or being rolled over on by co-sleeping, accidentally dropping them, accidentally bumping their heads into a hard object, accidents where they fall off something, burns due to hot water, strangulation due far apart bars in a crib, electricution due to various reasons... The list goes on.. there are probably a lot more accidents that happen..

Mainly though, infants die in car accidents. This can be prevented a lot of the time by using safety seats and more important installing them properly.

As far as the main cause of death in infants on the planet? The answer is dehydration due to diarrhea (normally due to dirty water used for bottles)
