Your question says that the motor cables get hot and your description says that the motor gets hot. If it is only the cables than the other gentlemen is correct and you need larger gauge wire. That is if the cable was added on. If the cable came with the motor from the manufacturer than most likely that cable was made for the motor. So the problem might actually be that there is something wrong with the pump itself causing the motor to work harder which would cause the motor to draw more amps and heat the cable up as well. In this case, the motor would also get much hotter than usual. If you can, disconnect the motor from the pump and spin the motor shaft with your hand to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the motor itself. If it spins freely than the motor is not hindering itself. If it is a very stiff turn than your motor is bad. maybe a bad motor bearing. I do not know the exact situation, but this should cover quite a bit. Don't forget to take a good look at your pump. Maybe you should try and turn them connected before disconecting them. Good luck.

sounds like it's trying to draw more power than the cord can handle, thus generation more heat. replace it with a larger AWG wire.
