Ok I have pink eye, i caught it from my daughter. Our doctor gave me gentamicin sulfate ophtalmic solution. I've been taking it for 3 days now. I am alergic to sulfa in medications. My eye has started burning and its cloudy at times. Does these drops that they perscriped contain sulfa? I know sulfates deal with sulfa I think. Any advice from people who know what they are talking about would be appricated.

If you are allergic to sulfas, youshould immediately discontinue the use of that prescribed eye drops. Gentamycin Sulfate Opthalmic Solution definitely contain sulfa as the name indicates. You should immediately start a regimen of eye washing with clean warm water and the use of eye drops such as Tearisol, Murine, or Refresh to restore moisture, lubricate and cause tearing effect to counteract the burning sensation side effects.

Definitely, the symptoms of burning and cloudiness are indicstions of an allergic reaction. Cloudiness might compromise your eyesight. I wouldn't take a chance; if I were you. You should if you haven't already immediately see a Doctor for a course of steroids ( anti-inflammatory) or cortisone shots such as Decadron( IM or IV) and or Prednisone (PO). I wouldn't take any chances as your eyes are very important and delicate.

Not knowing that I'm allergic to Sulfas, I was prescribed Septra for my UTI ( Urinary Tract Infection) . I had severe allergic reaction of high fevers, body rash, generalized body malaise and fatigue. I almost died from Septicemia ( Blood Poisoning).

However, I did alright when Sulfacetamide Ophthalmic drops were ordered for my Allergic Conjunctivitis years ago prior to Septra. I guess the local application of the Opthalmic solution is less severe than the systemic effect of the Septra.

There are several alternative eye antibiotics in the market such as Neo Poly Dex ( Neomycin and Polymycin) and Tobradex Eye Drops which has Tobramycin. Both are Steroid-antibiotic combinations and are safer. Another eye antibiotic, Erythromycin is also effective. Erythromycin is also effective for pimples and other skin infection.

.Homeopathically, there are a number of acute remedies designed to treat conjunctivitis. These include Pulsatilla (windflower, Pulsatilla nigricans), Belladonna, and eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis). Eye drops, prepared with homeopathic remedies and/or herbs, can be a good substitute for pharmaceutical eye drops. Eye washes can also be made. Herbal eyewashes made with eyebright (1 tsp. dried herb steeped in 1 pint of boiling water) or chamomile (Matricaria recutita; 2-3 tsp. in 1 pint of boiling water) may be helpful. Eyewashes should be strained and cooled before use, and close attention should be paid to make sure that any solution put into the eye is sterile.

Other simple home remedies may help relieve the discomfort associated with conjunctivitis. A boric acid eyewash can be used to clean and soothe the eyes. A warm compress applied to the eyes for five to 10 minutes three times a day can help relieve the discomfort of bacterial and viral conjunctivitis. A cool compress or cool, damp tea bags placed on the eyes can ease the discomfort of allergic conjunctivitis

it depends what kind of pink eye you have, viral, bacterial, allergic. If you have caught it chances are its viral or bacterial. Don't take any chances with these, especially viral if you vision goes cloudy as the surface of the eye could be damaged and this takes time to heal. Definately go see a specialist eye doctor. better safe.
Meanwhile remember to wash hands, disinfect door handles etc and don't share towels etc.
Hope it gets better soon.

of course, use the eye drops. and try to put a warm towel over her eye at times to help with the swelling. also, the warm water will help with the gunk that gets on and in the eye. if she's in daycare, you should get used to this. i'd also try to mention to some of the moms and get them to mention it to some of the moms...it'll just get passed back to her unless the moms get together and quarantine the one who has it until its gone. if you're having trouble with the drops, try turning thier head so the tear ducts are above the eye and drop the drop there. it will drain down over thier eyelids along the lash line. some will get to the eye even if most drains off onto the floor. this worked for mine.

Yes my son went through this put the drops in and in short time they will look better, and infection will be gone. The puffy eyes will subside in a day or so after starting the drops.

Run to the doctor. Eyes are very important. Don't self medicate yourself.
