Hi! Being a Golden breeder and lover you may think I'd say Golden's are better. I'm not. Each breed has their qualities that fit their owner needs and wants. Lab have a shorter coat where Golden have a more pronounced coat of flowing fur. Both are very family and owner friendly. Lab's tend to keep their puppy hood much longer than Golden's. Golden's tend to settle down quicker than Lab's, in that they have a go with flow with a family quicker. Both I feel are very intelligent. I feel that the Golden's I've raised are easier to train. Both are very well suited for water sports or for a hunting dog or just to join you in a swim. Both need grooming, their shedding is about the same, just that the Golden's coat is longer and may matt if the owner allows it to.
Both are very loyal to their family's. They both have about the same life span. I have had Golden's live to the ripe old age of 16 years old.
So, I think it's just a matter of the owner taste in which dog they would prefer and would make them happy.
I hope this helps you out. Good luck on the report!.

It's impossible to generalise about breeds of dogs, just as it is aboout people. A well bred Labrador will be better than a Golden which has been bred with no regard for temperament. A Golden bred for temperament will be better than a Labrador whose breeder just used the dog next door regardless of the ancestors of both parents. The most obvious difference is that Goldens have a longer coat which means more grooming, but Labs moult for Britain! There are about 4 times as many Labs bred each year than Goldens which is bad for the breed as so many end in rescue and are bred with no regard for minimising the risk of hereditary diseases. Both have similar health problems (Hip Dysplasia, eye disease). Which you regard as better depends purely on personal choice - just make sure the dog comes from a reputable breeder who carries out all the necessary health checks.

This depends on who you ask ! Both are excellent breeds of dog that can make great family dogs. The Golden Retriever has a longer coat than the Labrador, but both breeds shed their hair. Why not visit Discover Dogs this week at Crufts where both breeds will be on show with their experienced owners who will be able to give you expert advice on these breeds.

I have to say that yes, they are better. I own two of them, and the main thing I can tell you is that a Labrador Retriever is a highly trainable animal, and will retain more and learn faster than any of the Goldens we have had. Our goldens, although intelligent, were nowhere near as smart as our labs are.
There is no difference in care between the two breeds. Both require constant exercise, are energetic and lovable family pets. Both are wonderful dogs.
I hope this helps

I prefere labradors. Goldens have never worked out for my family. All of the labs though have been just fine. Just to let you know I have had experience with black labs, chocolate labs, yellow labs and golden retrievers. The labradors were nice and less hyper.

I have had both and they are very similar. The golden was a little more gentle than the lab. I think it just depends on the particular dog you end up getting, not the beed in this case.

I have a 5 year old Retriever and she is the sweetest dog ever. She is loyal and very placid and a big softie with kids. I do think it is up to the owner how the dog turns out and training. She is out family's first dog and we have learnt a lot. email me if you would like to ask any specific questions barrettsuej@aol.com

Just remember that BOTH are retrievers, and depending on the blood lines can be go-getters.
I have seen outstanding dogs from both breeds, but I have also seen lead sleds from both breeds.

They are very similar. Goldens are more laid back. I had a white lab that was one of the greatest dogs I've ever owned.

Golden retrivers malt more fur than Labs and are less friendly so if it is your first dog i would get a lab.
