They're a tough bunch - so are their dogs! It's the kind of thing someone would do if told he couldn't. Good on him!
Might it have been just a part of the coast, though? You never know with stories, they tend to get a bit more fantastic with each telling, mind you 'I walked round PART of the coast' doesn't sound nearly so impressive; as I said, they're tough, and I bet it was the whole way. How long would that've taken, I wonder?
