My parents divorced years ago and my father has since then re-married and had another child.

His name is Christopher.

Now, Christopher has a belly button.

It inflates.

Whenever he makes a lot of noise, screaming or laughing, it gets bigger. When he relaxes it almost makes it back into his belly.

Now I haven't ever been to the doctor with him, but my I heard from my parents that the doctors said this would quit within his first year of birth.

It hasn't.

Do you know what this is? Why it is? I have never heard of it before.

our bellybuttons are normally not distended, but whenever a person strains his abdomen so much, as with the case of pregnant women, abdominal distention and whenever you hold your breath and exert too much pressure on your abdomen (this is called valsalva's maneuver) when we scream or laugh, it sometimes is normal that the bellybutton would protrude. sometimes, it becomes herniated. the bellybutton normally goes back to its size in a few months or so, provided that no other stress is added to it. but if it does not, you can consult a doctor. all in all, its not a serious medical condition. it just looks a bit weird.

the doctor may be right, but i have known two younguns who needed surgery to repair a hernia. left unattended, a hernia can be serious.

perhaps its herniated. in which case it needs to be looked at and taken care of...perhaps a second opinion should be sought out.
