The government have take a very hypocritical stand point on the ban. Currently the government receive millions of pounds tax revenue from smokers that go toward the NHS/War in Iraq/Education etc.
If they wanted to take a moral high ground they would make smoking illegal and over the time of introduction would offer free smoking rehab for all people and not just the people on income support.
This government has made it possible to drink for 24 hours a day and soon with the introduction of the supper casino's it will be possible to lose your home and savings to gambling.
By the way I am a life long non smoker.

I'm not a smoker and I despise smoking. I think the world would be a better place if we didn't have people smoking. I am very pleased with the banning of smoking ordinances.
I saw that some asked what is next? Well, I hope they do a better job of pulling drivers off the road who drink and drive. I drink socially, if at all and I think you put yourself as well as the other drivers on the road at risk.
This question basically comes down to one thing, banning things that has an effect on others. Smoking does this, as well as driving while intoxicated. The difference between the two is that one is a more sudden death than the other.

I smoke lets get that out of the way first.
My local used to be packed to the doors with customers.
They implemented a smoking ban and now you go in the pub any time of the evening you want and pick a seat.
The first weekend of the ban the place was half empty the second weekend you could have had a game of football in there and not disturbed anyone at all
I'm not the looser I just nip outside for a cig. But the publican’s takings must have dropped by about 80%
Arhh Arhh, Think I'll just nip out for a ciggy
I think smokers should start a campaign to get all none smokers to give up there smelly air polluting gas guzzling cars

It does have its positive points, and as a smoker I can see where the government is coming from. I dont like the smell of other peoples smoke. But it should be down to the individual pub to decide if they want to enforce it. Some pubs will probably close due to lack of business, which will increase unemployment and our tax's!!!
I believe that pubs should be able to provide a smoking room for the people who still want a pint and a *** which if a non smoker wants to go into thats fine.

If the pubs are privately owned establishments..than it should be left up to the owners to whether they want to allow it or not....governments should not be allowed to dictate to others.. whether a legal substance can be used or not when it is on privately owned property.....what next..ban smoking in cars and peoples homes?...than after cigarettes ...what will they go after..the more doors the government is allowed to open in this smoking issue..the easier it will be for others issues they deem not healthy or right to be banned later on...and it will happen..it will not stop with cigarettes...they have their foot in door now.. ... people didn't stand up for individual rights..they just looked at the fact that smoking is bad for you and those around you.....and forgot to think about what these actions will lead to...its a shame....and I am not defending the use of cigarettes..but of individual rights..when you allow the government the power to erode these rights....your life will not be better for it.......

Bars were the only thing left... Only adults would be in a place like that and, most people that drink smoke, They should have left the bars alone, Smoking is bad, but people are going to do it any way. What next? No more smoking in our cars? Its good that they are putting such a negative look on it though maybe it will help with the new generation, maybe there will be less smokers. Its no longer cool to smoke!

It is a good idea I have thought so for a long time and I only gave up smoking 2 months ago!
It is nasty all that smoke even as a smoker I found it horrible making your clothes smell and sore eyes
I only ever smoked outside as it is a horrible smell inside and too much smoke (ie in pubs and clubs) makes your eyes sting and can be difficult to breath!
No not just for health reasons of the non smokers but for our clothes and making the night more enjoyable it is a good idea to ban it

It was introduced in Scotland last year. Personally I was delighted. The air in pubs and restaurants is much clearer for us non-smokers. Also on the plus side a recent news item said bingo halls are struggling in Scotland since the ban.
Only downside, she who must be obeyed has to pop into the street between courses when we go out for a meal.

You lot are so dim. I am a smoker and i pay for all your taxes. It is a well known fact that the revanue from tobbacco is greater than the cost of healthcare for smokers. How i will chuckle when everyone has to stop smoking and the blair dictatorship thinks of a new tax. Where on earth do you think they will get the money from? Bring back window tax no doubt.

It is a step in the wrong direction for human rights.
Next will be the ban on alcohol because it's bad for you.
Then will be ban on fatty foods and cakes
Then will be the ban on sex for uses other than procreation.
Then will be the ban on short skirts and other unneccessary fashion
Until we are all monochrome robots doing as we are told
