I'm in aviation and need to get a good measuring tool like a caliper so if anyone knows of any good quality calipers please let me know. I was thinking about something like CHicago Brand or Mitutoyo.

starret precision measuring tools. http://www.starrett.com/ they are the most precise you can get, not too bad on price either and they have a great warranty. i have a few and use them daily, good luck.

Also check with MACO and Snap-on.You can get on truck accounts and don't have to pay too much at one time for it. I only have to make small payments on my tools.
When going for precision measuring tools, don't go cheap like Chicago. What I found out with other mechanics that did that was their tools had to be rejected after only a year or two because they went way too far out of calibration and they couldn't be re-certified. You want to buy something that is going to last and be able to take some abuse that will happen (like dropping it).
I own both a Vernier caliper and a full set of micrometers. Sometimes its easier to use one tool over the other depending on what your measuring. I acutally use the mic's more than the caliper in what I do. I work in an engine overhaul shop, so mic's are used alot more.

Mitutoyo is a good brand and Starret is excellent too. No on the Chicago. You get what you pay for and the quality and accuracy wouldn't be there on that brand overtime I would think it would get diminishing results.
I have a Mitutoyo and a Helios 6" caliper and a Starrett C micrometer and Depth Micrometer. They have all been reliable and accurate and I have used them for twenty years in the Aircraft Manufacturing industry.

The best is Starrett but Mitutoyo is a good brand too. You can find either at MSC industrial supply or www.mcmaster.com. Mine says "made in china" because I cant afford a Starrett
