When it comes down to it, should members of Royal Families or family memebers of heads of state serve in the armed forces???

Are they considered to be real service personnel or are they "playing soldier"???

Al Quaeda have sworn to kidnap or kill Prince Harry, but does anyone consider him a real soldier??? Does he "muck in" with the rest or does HE get 24 hour protection???

And really what is his purpose for "serving"???

If I recall, another Prince served as a helicopter pilot during the Battle for the Falklands.

The British Royal family has a history of serving in the military. I do not think it is a PR move. I personally would not want to be one of his soldiers because I do believe he would put them at greater risk.

I have no way of knowing but would guess he will be treated very similiar to other new officers. The British, by the way, have not withdrawn but have simply lowered the numbers based on the progress made in the southern part of Iraq.

1- Of course they should. I see no reason why. If they desire to serve, why not?

2- He's a trained officer. He went through everything everyone else had to. How is this playing soldier? No disrespect but the people who come into the National Guard straight from civilian life are the people who are playing Soldier.

Al Qaeda would kill anyone anytime anywhere. Royalty or not. They will try though.

It's always wrong to assume what one's intentions are. But hey, give him the benefit of the doubt. I believe that he really wants to serve. The only thing I don't know is, what his job is,.. if it's other than Infantry or Armor, then I really wouldn't worry.

I think he really wants to serve. He demanded to be sent didn't he? If he wants to fight, let him fight. Because others won't! Others wouldn't give a crap if they saw a Russian tank rolling down their street.

I don't think it was a smart thing to give out all that information about his deployment. But then again I still don't believe it's a PR ploy. They just did all that publicity to show that they are not afraid.

He is not just playing soldier. He is a trained soldier who was treated like other members of the armed forces. He and his superiors all take this very seriously, knowing full well what they are getting into. Fortunately, he has some rank and won't have to "muck in" exactly. Let's put it this way. Any special treatment he receives will be due to his rank, not his blood. Now, it may be reasonable to question if his bloodline had anything to do with his rank (which I imagine it does) but it doesn't affect how he serves. In a way, it is kinda about PR. He is probably trying to set a good example for everyone; showing that even royalty don't mind getting their hands dirty (which isn't uncommon in Britain's history). He is just trying to be a good citizen and do what he believes is right.

By graduating Sandhurst Prince Harry has the education and self-discipline to take care of himself and his men. Naturally he is a prime target to kill or capture by terrorists. But to be a leader does require great risk. His purpose in serving in Iraq or anywhere else is that he is a commissioned officer and the British Army is going to send him where he is needed.

I was really surprised by the decision to send harry over to Iraq. I thought the royal family wouldn't let him.

Anyway a brave decision but I think really dumb.

What a great way for the trouble makers to behead one of the royal family on TV

Princes Diana showed the way! You go in the Military and no one ever asks your opinion about every and anything for four years or whatever your commitment. It is very hard to tell one soldier from another. In uniform they mostly look alike. The service can hide the Prince without much effort. So, be cool and let the Prince show himself that he is human and normal.

Let me begin by answering your last question: I don't know what was his purpose for being a soldier in a war zone. But suppose the purpose is for him, as a possible future king (please God), to be trained and also to be popular amongst soldiers, in order to have a military unit for the purpose of crushing any attempts against him, which may be planned by "color (orange, rose) revolutionaries". That sounds logic and nothing is wrong with that. Otherwise, I don't see any point in participating in wars of aggression, such as the war in Iraq.

if he is being treated just like a real soldier then it is fair and good, but if it is just for anything else but for propanganda stuff he should just get the hell out of wherever he is assigned and just stay in the palace and play polo or do whatever royalties does, look good in the camera.

He is 2nd in line to be king of England, He needs to earn respect. It has always been like that since Greek times. A leader or a high ranking person wishing to command greater Respect and bolster moral would fight in the war.

Unless he's being treated equally as other British soldiers, he's just a propaganda tool for the ultra-rich to show "they care about the middle class", and they'll risk a dipstick kid in their imperialist resource wars to prove it.
