he passed away some years ago and never really talked about it. I know he was in the pacific but thats about it. I was wondering if there is some kind of database that shows what ship he was on and so I can put some of the story together. This is a proud piece of my family's history and would like to know more about it.

You or perhaps your parents can request his military records from the National Archives.

Look up the VVA , Vietnam Veterans of America Magazine or others like it, and ask if anyone out there remembers your Grandfather by name. He must have talked about his ship, mates, or action he saw with someone. So ask everyone. The Magazines runs search information for buddies and outfits. Dig deep!

Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Purple Heart Organization or stories. If nothing else, talk to them in depth.
What you are really after is the answer to how those in your Grandfathers generation saw and understood their time and people in relation to others in different times. It has a bearing on how you see your time. It is everyday people in unsual circumstances. There is a huge leap of faith envolved, but don't let that stop you!
Good for you!

All I can think of is a two step process. First, try to get his records from the VA.

On the DD214, it will say what ship he served on. From there, you can do separate research as to what action that ship saw while your grandfather was serving on it, if any.

Good luck!

I would think so, Have you tried writing a leter to your govener? or Mayor? They should know if its possible or not. Im sure it is, the US keeps records of "Who was in what unit" all the way back to the revolautionary war.
