A handicap of 12 is exactly the same -- that is, 12 strokes subtracted from their scores at the end of the round in stroke play, or a stroke taken off of the 12 toughest handicap holes in match play. The only difference is sometimes the 12 toughest handicap holes are different holes for men and for women. In other words, Hole 3 might be the 3rd handicap hole for men but the 15th handicap hole for women, so the man would get the stroke off on that hole, but the woman would not.

Also, for the same handicap index -- let's say 12.4 -- the men's handicap and women's handicap is often different because the difficulty of the course (slope rating) is different. So, for example, a man playing from the black tees might have a handicap of 15 with a handicap index of 12.4, while a woman playing the same course from the red tees might have a handicap of 14, even though she also has a handicap index of 12.4.
