This is a disastrous mistake made by Microsoft genuine brains .
I hope you problem would be solved by first service pack of Vista.
You should not have purchased it because it is very new so it is normal to face new and weird problem . But you can get over it with meditation . Do not get angry just relax and if you have a Windows Xp cd you can reinstall it on your harddrive ..
I am still usin XP with service pack 2 and it is better than using a Vista .Vista is also more and more expensive it does not deserve its price . But you have already bought it .
What can you do to solve your problem at the moment? You can send a report to Microsoft for the failure if they can solve the problem this will be easy otherwise the best thing to do is not using media center . I know this is not a solution but it is better than getting angry to hidden mouse pointer . My friend newly purchased a Vista edition like you and he is also having troubles with it that is very normal .I used it once or twice and I would not pay so much money just for a new look . It does not worth . It is still better to use windows xp . I hope you can go back to XP I mean you have cd . You will face many problems including driver software and some plugins
Good Luck
