it depends on the finish on the wood. Nail polish remover (acetone) would work in most cases without damaging the wood but if there is a sensitive finish on the wood it could be damaged. Did you spill a bottle of nailpolish on your dinner table or something?

Very carefully. DO NOT USE FINGERNAIL POLISH REMOVER!!! If it is natural wood that hasn't been stained or finished in any way, you may use fingernail polish remover. If it is a wood that has been stained, I would suggest that you try to sand it with first, a piece of paper bag. The paper bag will sand very smoothly. It works like a fine, fine piece of sandpaper. Try, though, to only sand the polish itself and not any part of the finish.
Also, if it is a thick layer of fingernail polish that has spilled, you may use a light touch of fingernail polish remover to help you get closer to the wood finish. Be very careful not to get to the actual wood finish.
If a paper bag is too fine, you can use sandpaper or just a plain emery board that is used to file your fingernails. Whatever you do, do it as gently as possible if you are trying to preserve the finish on your coffee table.
