There have been areas where planning could have been a lot better, and some things could have gone forward a lot faster, but I try to keep in mind that though "we" have been there almost four years, the al Maliki government has only been in place for one, so it seems wrong to judge based only on the former date. It's their country, and our strategic position from the beginning was to recognize that. Had we gone in with the idea of taking over the country as a colony, then we'd be way behind schedule. As it is, the Iraqi government seems to have made remarkable progress in the past few months after a slow and unsteady start, but that's only a matter of months, so it seems the degree of furor we have at home is unwarranted.

I am not a Military expert but I can give you my opinion...

Lets see...4 years later, The USA has lost more people than we did on September 11th, 2001.

Things in Iraq are worse than they were the day before The USA Invaded.

It looks like The USA will be in Iraq for years to come because things are getting worse not better in Iraq.

How would I rate our progress?....I say it gets a failing grade.

I would say, based on what we are trying to do and in the enviorment, i would say either a stalemate, or better slow progress.

Its not the quick lighting war everyone thought it would be, we thought they would act like they knew how to accept freedom, but they are more interested in killing each other over sunnis, shiites, and kurds.

They have to get over their issues and work together, we are making progress their the government in Iraq is finally doing something about it.

I would say we are doing "ok" overall. Eollent military wise, and poor politically.

We've made negative progress - because Iraq is worse off than when under Saddam. Under Saddam, most Iraqis could live relatively normal lives, as long as they weren't trying to be political...now...they get whacked for being political, they get whacked for being one kind of muslim over another, they get whacked for helping us, they get whacked for stepping up and trying to be in the army, or the police....I think we've made Iraq worse.

On the other hand...I know the soldiers are doing their best, and we should keep in mind when judging their results that they're soldiers. They do many good things, but they were trained to fight. Were they trained to sort out political problems, fix municipal services, etc? I doubt it.

Want progress in Iraq? Engage Iran. They wanted to help with the Taliban, and they were branded as an Axis of Evil. We won't get anywhere with them with Bush, or anyone like him. Were I president, I'd like to think my diplomacy would be far more effective than W's. I'd talk first, and bomb later.

It's hard to tell any progress is possible under circumstances American soldiers are fighting...It's easy to tell the soldier, he's fighting for democracy and better life of local population, against terrorism and so on...
In fact his daily experience is a devastating one to his moral; he sees hundreds of dead, poverty, unbelievable acts of terror and his friends get dead or wounded...
Soldier must believe in victory in order to act efficiently, I'm afraid situation in Iraq is far from victory of any kind...

An ill concieved plan by an ill conceived Commander-in-Chief.

God help us all if he attacks Iran.

EDIT - Jnwmom below me. So apparently then we are all safe and I shouldnt expect to hear of any more soldiers deaths? The insurgents are just laying low until the sweep is over with. Thats all. Geez, the same logic you are applying is like when Bush declared the war over 3 years ago!
