Petco or Petsmart sell a toilet litter box to train your cat to use the toilet. I don't know if it works though. I have seen a cat use the toilet. Very freaky.

Maybe. It may be easier to get a bigger litter box. Perhaps you can use one of those flat plastic trays that several flats of plants come in. They look to be about 2 feet by 15 inches which ought to give him room enough. Puppy training pads may be another answer. Or use a cardboard box with a plastic liner.

Here is a way to teach him to use the toilet that has worked with many cats, not all but many. Try this ONLY if you have two or more bathrooms because while he is learning he's going to need his own commode at first. Start by providing a litter box in the bathroom next to the commode. It seems to help if you allow the cat into the bathroom while you are using the commode aka "people box" The smell and sound seem to show that this is the place.

After a few days put a slightly used litter box on the commode. If necessary put s board under it to hold it steady. If he likes to climb and explore you are more likely to get him to make the transition. Once he will use the elevated box start cutting down on the amount of litter. As he gets used to that cut a small hole in the bottom of the box. Little by little enlarge the hole ill he is just using the commode. This method has been used by a number of people and has worked if the cat will use the elevated box at all. Personally I think it is a good idea to have a ground level box in another place in case the cat decides he doesn't want to cooperate with this but I hate cat mess.

Given your cat's "technique" a commode chair and bedpan amy work for him too. In that case you can put litter directly in the bed pan and see whether he takes to it.

We had a cat who taught herself to use the "people box" as opposed to the cat box. Her cat box was in the bathroom. Where else in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment? Near the commode Where else in a tiny bathroom? I kept noticing that seat had pee splatters in it and that there was pee in the toilet and was very unhappy with my husband and tried not to start a fight. He kept noticing that I was (he thought) missing the target and not flushing and was pretty unhappy with me. Then one day he was home alone and in the shower when he heard water outside the shower. He thought we had a prowler so shampoo bottle in hand for a weapon he yanked back the curtain and there crouched cat on the commode. We kaughted about that for days. She never did manage BM's in there but she peed in the toilet fior years. She just taught herself. She was likely to take over anything she saw us use or have so I guess she decided our "box" was her box too.

As far as your cat's weight is he muscular or flabby? If flabby maybe something like a treat ball to chase or a cat dangler or just active play with you will help. A friend of ours has a 30 lb cat and he is 30lb of muscle not flab.

It all depends on your cat. I have an automatic scooping litter box, and one of my girls REFUSES to use it.... So my 13 year old, 2 year old and 6 month old use it. My 11 year old uses a traditional box. Doesn't matter what we do. So we have to have two litter boxes, not one.

Your cat may try it out and be fine in the early stages then completely revert if he hear's his poop hitting the water. The splash scares some cats. Make sure during training to have the other box accessible, in case he changes his mind.

I once knew a cat who decided on his own to use the toilet. He learned by watching people.
