If you rule out thyroid and other health issues, I suggest seeing a psychologist and possibly a nutritionist for your weight. Treat antidepressant medication as a last resort. Sure, it can help some people, but like I said before therapy has the same sucess rate, but without the relapse after finishing and the side effects. Personally, I experienced something worse than just plain old depression while on the medication and I've known at least one other person who experienced the same. I don't think it's worth the risk until your desperate. I know a lot of people spout on about how great these medications are, but that's only if they work for you. If they don't work for you, forget getting help from the medical industry. You would be a minority and your doctors don't need your money when they can prescribe SSRI's to hundreds of patients that tolerate them.

I think you can get depressed from both. However, they are different reasons. Becoming obese can depress one but that's something you can take care of yourself. Chemical depression requires medical attention.
