I don't know, but it was probably so long ago that the name has not been recorded. I think that curds and whey (cotttage cheese) is such a natural product of curdling millk that it must go back to very, very early times, and originates with herdsmen societies who raised sheep and goats. Curds and whey was popular with the ancient Egyptians and Greeks.

I do know one trivia fact about eating cottage cheese. Apparently, President Richard Nixon's favorite food, going back to childhood, was a mix of cottage cheese and tomato catsup.
